Villfarelsen om gud

Jag såg att den svenska översättningen av Richard Dawkins bästsäljare (bl.a. etta på Amazon.com) The God Delusion kommer att heta Illusionen om Gud. Detta är en felöversättning som inte fångar vad den engelska titeln säger. Delusion och illusion är inte alls samma sak. Det engelska ordet illusion är utbytbart mot det svenska ordet, men delusion betyder villfarelse - en tro som står i strid med verkligheten och en oförmåga att ta till sig fakta. Det är mycket starkare än illusion. Den svenska översättningen är missledande - it?s deluding.

Jag är väldigt glad att Leopard förlag har valt att översätta denna kontroversiella bok, men jag är grymt besviken på titeln. Om du håller med mig, kontakta förlaget och klaga:

Tack för tipset! Jag ska ta och skriva ett mail till dem. Det är sant att "Illusionen om Gud" inte fångar andemeningen i originaltiteln.

När jag själv köpte boken funderade jag på hur man skulle översätta titeln till svenska, och ordet som jag kom att tänka på som synonym till delusion var "vanföreställning". Tyvärr har jag ingen ordbok och kan inte jämföra definitionen av villfarelse och vanföreställning, men jag har på känn att vanföreställning kommer närmare engelskans delusion.

Dawkins valde ju ordet med tanke på kopplingen till psykisk sjukdom (sidan 5), och i det sammanhanget är vanföreställning mer korrekt än villfarelse. En villfarelse är ju en feluppfattning, men antydan om sjuklighet saknas i betydelsen. (Enligt min egen ordkänsla som sagt, jag har ju ingen ordbok att kontrollera med!)

Jag har inte läst boken (än, håller på med The End of Faith) men om Dawkins hänvisar till psykisk sjukdom blir ju den svenska titeln ännu mer vilseledande.

Enilgt mitt lexikon ?The Concise Oxford Dictionary? betyder ordet:

Delusion: Imposing or being imposed upon; false impression or opinion, esp. as a form of madness.

Enligt mitt svenska lexikon:

Impose: pålägga, begagna sig av, lura, imponera på, dupera.

Vad som verkligen menas med delusion tycks därför tvetydigt. Det kan betyda självförvillelse eller något starkare uttryckt vanföreställning, men det kan också betyda lurendrejeri. Den engelska boktiteln är således mycket väl funnen och betydligt mer provoserande än översättningen villfarelser.

I sammanhanget kan man kanske också påpeka att engelsk och amerikansk engelska då och då skiljer sig åt vad beträffar nyanser.

Så här skriver Dawkins om själva titeln:

"The dictionary supplied with Microsoft Word defines a delusion as 'a persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictionary evidence, especially as a symptom of psychiatric disorder'. The first part captures religious faith perfectly. As to whether it is a symptom of a psychiatric disorder, I am inclined to follow Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, when he said, 'When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion, it is called Religion."

Det är alltså slapphänt att översätta titeln till "Illusionen om Gud"! Dawkins är väldigt uttrycksfull i sitt språk och väljer sina ord med omsorg, och om de inte lyckas tolka titeln på boken rätt så befarar jag att de kommer missa en del poänger i texten också.
