Problemet med agnosticismen är att om det inte går att veta något om Gud är gudsbegreppet utan innehåll, och ordet gud är bara ett meningslöst ljud. Alla försök att prata om något vi inte kan veta något om är meningslöst och resulterar i absurda och motsägelsefulla påståenden. Hur kan vi veta att Gud är oidentifierbar om vi inte kan veta något om Gud? Det är en självmotsägelse att säga att något specifikt inte kan identifieras. Vad är det som inte kan identifieras? Om Gud inte kan identifieras är det omöjligt att definiera gudsbegreppet på ett meningsfullt sätt. Och om vi inte kan definiera gudsbegreppet blir det meningslöst att säga att Gud inte kan identifieras. Att påstå att Gud är oidentifierbar ? när gudsbegreppet inte betyder något ? är att säga ingenting. Man kan lika gärna säga att X är oidentifierbar. Och när gudsbegreppet inte betyder något blir det också meningslöst att påstå att Gud existerar. Agnosticismen ogiltigförklarar alla argument för Guds existens därför att agnosticismen ogiltigförklarar gudsbegreppet. Agnosticism innebär därför att ateismen är den enda förnuftiga ståndpunkten.

Jag håller med, men som jag skrev i mitt svar på ditt andra inlägg finns det flera varianter av agnosticism. En variant är precis den du säger och jag upplever den som föga genomtänkt just med tanke på de konsekvenser den får.

Men en annan agnostiker skulle helt enkelt kunna instämma i ditt resonemang och säga att ordet "gud" är meningslöst och att det är därför som man inte kan ha någon kunskap om gud.

Det är viktigt att förstå att George H. Smith i ditt citat argumenterar mot religiös agnosticism, alltså tron att gud finns och att gud är okänd. Han argumenterar inte mot agnosticism i allmänhet, utan just denna teistiska föreställning.

Har för mig att Smith i sin bok även argumenterar mot agnosticism i allmänhet.

Problemet som jag ser med agnosticism är att man tycks anse att det är ungefär 50/50 sannolikhet att gud finns/inte finns, men att den totala bristen på argument för guds existens borde visa att ett sånt förhållande inte är riktigt.

Agnosticism i vissa andra frågor, t.ex. förekomsten av liv på andra planeter, känns som en förnuftig ståndpunkt, men agnosticism i fråga om guds existens tycks lika meningslös som agnosticism i fråga om Russells tekanna eller den osynliga rosa enhörningen.

Som sagt finns det olika definitioner på vad agnosticism innebär, även bland agnostiker.

Själv kallar jag mig t.ex agnostiker i det avseendet att jag inte tror på något som det inte finns bevis för.
